- Friday, 21 August 2009Unemployment in Britain's seaside towns has increased by up to 130 per cent, despite a rise in the number of people holidaying at home.
That is according to the Trades Union Congress (TUC), which has revealed that a plethora of UK coastal towns have seen jobless numbers more than double.
The increase in unemployment could see a rise in the number of people facing bankruptcy and insolvency.
Individual voluntary agreement (IVA) take-up rates could subsequently increase as a result of people wishing to avoid declaring themselves bankrupt.
Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary, said: "Unemployment is at crisis level in many of our best-loved traditional English holiday destinations.
'Many seaside towns have made impressive and imaginative efforts to regenerate themselves, and deserve real praise, but even the most ambitious scheme cannot buck the effects of such a deep recession."
Towns that have seen significant increases in joblessness, include Bournemouth (130 per cent), Weston-Super-Mare (122 per cent) and Weymouth (113 per cent).
Unemployment rose by 2.4 million earlier this month, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics.
