- Wednesday, 10 June 2009Almost a quarter (24 per cent) more people sought advice on bankruptcy from Citizens Advice Bureaux in the year ending March 2009 than in the previous 12 months, the organisation has revealed.
In all, bankruptcy advice was sought on 137,406 new issues over the course of the year - up from 110,819 in 2007-08.
The figures are part of a wider trend of increasing financial difficulties for users of the Bureaux as the months went by.
In addition to bankruptcy advice, queries about mortgage arrears were up by 49 per cent, with redundancy issues 114 per cent more prevalent than in the previous year.
Overall, advice was given on six million separate problems - an increase of almost a tenth year-on-year.
However, the recession - and the associated rise in enquiries - is putting the organisation under renewed pressure.
It recently put out a call for more volunteers to apply to become trained advisers in order to allow it to keep pace with the growing number of requests it receives for financial help.
