- Friday, 19 June 2009Women account for the majority of people filing for bankruptcy at the moment, it has been revealed.
Accountancy firm Wilkins Kennedy notes that, in the past five years, women have for the first time become the gender most likely to declare bankruptcy.
Those who have been through a marriage break-up could be especially likely to be filing for bankruptcy in the coming months, the accountant adds.
It explains that more divorcees are being driven towards bankruptcy as they are less able to minimise their outgoings during the current downturn due to child support and maintenance payments.
Anthony Cork, director of the firm, says: "As the recession drags on, more and more breadwinners could lose their jobs.
"With such financial burden on their shoulders, they could hit the insolvency wall incredibly quickly."
The organisation cites figures from the Office for National Statistics which show the proportion of divorcees who had already been through one marriage break-up doubled between 1980 and 2007.
