- Tuesday, 14 July 2009The UK's blue collar workforce has been hit significantly harder by increasing unemployment levels than those in managerial and professional roles, according to new research.
The trend could see a rise in the number of blue collar trades-people in the red and subsequently seeking debt advice.
Research conducted by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) showed that unemployment among blue collar workers was three times higher than that of white collar employees, dispelling popular notions of a 'white collar recession'.
John Philpott, chief economist at the CIPD, said that this was predominantly down to publicity.
He commented: "Heavy job losses in the financial and business services sectors plus the fact that jobless managers and professionals often attract more public attention probably explains why there has been so much talk about a white collar recession.
"But the unemployment figures show that blue collar manual workers have suffered most."
The CIPD's report is expected to preempt a further rise in unemployment, with figures to be released shortly.
