- Wednesday, 24 March 2010The leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg, has accused Alistair Darling's budget of being "a political dodge", and there are certainly few measures announced that will help those needing
debt management advice.
Clegg claimed that Labour was in denial, saying: "Britain needed a budget that gave us honesty in spending and fairness in tax, we have got neither."
Leader of the Conservative Party David Cameron was equally unimpressed, saying that the government has failed to help enough people with economic problems.
Announced today, the budget held bad news for smokers, drinkers and motorists.
Duty on tobacco is to increase by one per cent today and by a further two per cent every year thereafter until 2014.
Cider drinkers have been hit by a mammoth ten per cent hike above inflation on duty, with beer, wine and spirits seeing duty increases as well.
Though the expected three pence increase in petrol duty was indeed confirmed, there was at least a modicum of good news insofar as it will come in three stages over the course of the next year.
However, with high energy prices and continued unemployment, duty rises could well push vulnerable households into requiring
debt management help.
