- Tuesday, 8 December 2009Cancer sufferers in Britain are being threatened with benefit cuts if they fail to turn up to back-to-work interviews, it has been revealed.
That is according to Macmillan Cancer Support and Citizens Advice, which suggest that the government's Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) process is failing Britain's seriously ill.
Those people who are unable to attend their interview and are subsequently faced with reduced benefit rates could find themselves struggling financially and in need of debt help.
Mike Hobday, head of campaigns at Macmillan Cancer Support, said: "It's cruel and completely unacceptable that people who are terminally ill or going through gruelling treatment are being made to jump through hoops to get money they should receive automatically."
He went on to say that the safeguards implemented to protect cancer patients "clearly aren't working" and that the ESA system is "riddled with problems".
Meanwhile, Citizens Advice said that the ESA process was causing "real hardship to the most vulnerable".
