- Tuesday, 16 March 2010More people are contacting the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) in need of advice over
debt management plans.
According to the charity's figures, 335,323 calls were made to the organisation in 2009. This represents a 25 per cent increase on the previous year. Moreover, more than 150,000 people logged online to seek debt advice on the CCCS website.
More and more people who would not normally have found themselves overly indebted, that is, to the tune of more than 20 times their net monthly income, have found themselves needing help with their debts.
"It is rare for an annual review to reflect such rapid change," said CCCS chairman Malcolm Hurlston in a talk at the House of Commons.
"The new penury has struck many people who would ordinarily not have fallen into debt on the basis of their borrowings alone," he said.
Alongside these statistics sat the revelation that just a quarter of people phoning the helpline had the means to go onto a repayment plan such as an
IVA.
