- Monday, 7 December 2009Britons who are currently trying to get out of debt could face associated problems as a result of the proposed nationwide installation of smart meters.
National Energy Action (NEA) has suggested that while the benefits of smart meters for the wealthy are evident, Britain's poor will simply be reminded of the costs of energy and forced to face the cold.
Such a decision particularly among Britain's poor elderly could have potentially dangerous consequences.
Maria Wardrobe, director of communications at the NEA, said: "NEA is concerned that additional information provided by smart metering will simply emphasise the unaffordable cost of fuel.
"[This could] lead to more vulnerable households turning their heating down or even off during spells of cold weather."
According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, all UK homes will have smart meters fitted by their suppliers by the end of 2020.
It is hoped that smart energy use will save consumers money, make electricity use more efficient and cut carbon emissions.
