- Tuesday, 6 October 2009UK cybercrime is on the increase as a result of a rise in the number of people failing to adequately protect themselves when online.
That is according to Garlik, which suggests that as a result of advanced techniques and consumer complacency, the system is open to abuse from cybercriminals.
As a result of the increase in fraudulent activity more people could find themselves in need of debt help.
Figures from the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) reveal that the quantity of banking Trojans and password-stealing crimeware infections rose by more than 186 per cent from the end of 2008 to the middle of 2009.
Tom Ilube, chief executive at Garlik, said: "Fraudsters are combining more advanced technology with a bit more smarts on the social engineering side at the same time as consumers are becoming more complacent.
"The net effect of that is the fraudsters are having it pretty easy at the moment."
APWG data indicates the total number of infected UK computers as of quarter two 2009 stood at 11,937,944.
