- Wednesday, 15 July 2009The Conservative Party has suggested that benefit claims could hit £11.6 billion by 2010/11.
The Tories believe that increasing unemployment, in conjunction with associated council tax and housing benefit claims, will raise the cost to the taxpayer from £4.85 billion in 2008/09 to £11.59 billion in 2010/11, according to the Daily Telegraph.
According to the government, the number of UK citizens claiming unemployment benefits could rise from 1.54 million last month to 2.87 million before the recession ends, while a number of independent analysts put this figure at more than three million.
Debt advice needs could rise as a result of the increased number of people on government support programmes.
Despite the Conservatives' employment forecast, the government insists it is combating the issue.
Jim Knight, the Employment Minister, said: "We've invested £5 billion to keep Britain working, which means more advisers in job centres, a guarantee of work or training for young people, and 250,000 new jobs in growing sectors.'
The Office of National Statistics releases its unemployment figures today (July 15th), which are widely expected to have risen.
