- Thursday, 3 June 2010This year's wedding season is set to be the most expensive yet, which could make it difficult for consumers to stay on top of their
debt management plans.
According to Direct Line, the insurance company, wedding guests spend an average of £294 each on gifts and preparations.
In the annual wedding survey, the firm found that the costs of attending a wedding had increased and most people spend around £80 on a wedding gift.
Andrew Morrell, home insurance expert at Direct Line, said: "A lot of money is spent on wedding gifts, even in the midst of a recession, although some parts of the country seem to be more willing to give generously than others."
Northern Irish people appeared to be the most generous as they would spend on average £158.
It was also found that 17 per cent would make up an excuse for not attending if it was due to financial difficulties. A further 44 per cent would spend less on the gift and 52 per cent would forgo a new outfit or hat.
The total number of weddings in 2008 was 270,400 and most couples were in their late 20s or early 30s.
