Confused.com has recommended that people who have outstanding debts pay them off as quickly as possible in order to avoid such an eventuality.
Those that are struggling with repayments could find seeking debt help allows them to meet the payment schedules.
Joanne Garcia, head of credit cards at Confused.com said that while people's spending habits varied depending on age, the importance of wiping debt was universally important.
She commented: "Approaches and attitudes differ, however the recognition in clearing credit balances must remain consistent.
"Those with existing balances should make every effort to clear them as soon as possible."
Confused.com revealed that 77 per cent of 51 to 55-year-olds are immediately accepted when applying for a new credit card, with 83 per cent of them so confident in their finances that they have not checked their credit score in more than a year.
