- Monday, 11 January 2010Debt management may be needed by the number of families being pushed into financial difficulties on the back of rising energy bills.
Save the Children has expressed its concerns about the UK's poorest families finding themselves in debt as they are forced to borrow money for their heating costs.
A YouGov survey conducted with the charity found that over a quarter (27 per cent) of those with an income below £12,000 a year said they would have to borrow money in order to pay electricity and gas bills. Some 60 per cent stated they would cut back on heating just to be able to afford to get by this winter.
Save the Children's UK director Fergus Drake said many families would be hit hard by the recent cold snap and throughout winter.
"Heating and winter clothes are expensive and, for families on a tight budget, they simply cannot afford to keep warm," he said.
"Many families are choosing between sitting in a freezing cold house or getting into debt to keep warm, pushing them further into poverty."
According to independent price comparison site uSwitch.com, the average household now faces an energy bill of £1,239 - 36 per cent more than at the beginning of 2008.
