- Monday, 11 January 2010Britons are committing to
debt management in the new year by ditching trips to the gym in order to save money.
According to research by moneysupermarket.com, one in ten people admit they are not utilising their gym membership and plan to cancel it in a bid to cut back on needless expenditure.
Almost half (46 per cent) of respondents believe the gym is an unnecessary cost, stating they will keep fit in other ways. This is in comparison to only one per cent 12 months ago.
Head of protection at moneysupermarket.com Emma Walker said with gym memberships costing as much as £500 a year, people were reviewing their disposable income and deciding they could no longer afford it.
"It's important to remember that while joining a gym can be a huge financial commitment, especially if you are on a tight budget, it's not the only way to kick-start a healthy new year," she said.
"There's no point wasting your hard-earned cash."
The Daily Mail recently reported that the traditional new year's resolution of vowing to lose weight has been replaced with a goal of managing stretched finances, according to research by Weight Watchers.
