- Wednesday, 2 June 2010Football fans heading to South Africa for the World Cup tournament should be careful about using their phones as large bills could be accrued, which could affect a
debt management plan.
If consumers have bigger bills to pay they will have less money to pay towards their
debt management plan.
Consumer Focus is warning thousands of England fans travelling abroad for the tournament to check their rates before they go as making calls or sending texts could be more expensive in South Africa.
Nick Hutton, communications expert for Consumer Focus, said: "England fans need to be on the ball to make sure they don't get caught out by hundreds of pounds of hidden mobile phone costs at the World Cup.
"We want to see mobile phone firms play fair by customers travelling abroad and cut these extremely high fees. In the meantime consumers should check their network rates before they fly and look into the add-ons or bundles on offer, which could save them much needed cash."
The company calculated that sending ten photos to the social networking site Facebook could cost as much as £80 on some networks.
Consumers could also get into financial difficulty or become victims of fraud if they use their credit cards abroad.
