- Thursday, 8 April 2010A committee of MPs has roundly criticised the government's efforts to help those struggling with
debt management.
The Public Accounts Committee, chaired by Edward Leigh, branded the government's attempts to help the indebted "a complete failure".
This could well suggest that those struggling with debt problems could benefit from seeking professional individual voluntary arrangement (
IVA) or
debt management plan advice from established professionals.
Edward Leigh said: "Unfortunately, the management of this strategy has been a complete failure.
"The government created a myriad of different interventions, 51 in total, but the arrangements for coordinating them have not worked and no-one has been in charge."
Though there was some praise for a Department for Business, Innovation and Skills' initiative which has provided people with face to face debt advice, concerns were expressed that funding could be an issue as demand begins to outstrip its capabilities.
What is clear is that a great need for
debt management help remains for many members of the British public and this report indicates that the government is unable to provide it.
