- Wednesday, 14 October 2009The number of UK citizens seeking advice on
individual voluntary agreements (IVAs) could increase as a result of the spiralling levels of identity theft.
According to figures from CIFAS, the UK's fraud prevention service, the number of identity fraud cases has increased by 36 per cent this year so far.
The financially damaging effects of identity fraud could result in an increasing number of people seeking information on debt-beating solutions such as IVAs.
James Webb, identity fraud expert and spokesperson for National Fraud Prevention Week, which started on Monday (October 12th), suggests that while the population is aware of the dangers of ID theft, it is up to the individual to minimise the risk.
He said: "They should firstly keep personal and confidential documents secure, and, if they are going to dispose of them, make sure that they always cross-cut shred the documents before disposing of them."
Mr Webb went on to reveal that ID fraud costs the UK economy more than £1.2 billion a year.
