- Monday, 11 January 2010IVA help may be needed by the increasing number of UK householders using credit cards to pay their mortgages or rent.
New research from housing charity Shelter reveals that more than one million people in the UK reverted to the drastic measure over the last 12 months, despite restrictions on credit and reports of more people paying off debt.
People from working class professions represented the highest proportion of those who had fallen victim.
Director of policy and campaigns at Shelter Kay Boycott said it was a "shocking discovery" to find that so many households were in such desperate circumstances.
"If people are already struggling to the extent that they fear losing their home, increasing credit card debt cannot be the answer," she added.
Ms Boycott said it was imperative that people using their credit cards in this way sought advice to ensure they did not end up homeless.
Figures from the Bank of England show that UK households reduced their outstanding mortgage debt by £4.9 billion in the third quarter - the sixth successive quarter in which homeowners have repaid more of their mortgage than they borrowed.
