IVA may help those facing a significant energy bill debt, with new figures revealing that consumers now owe suppliers £728 million.
Research from uSwitch.com indicates that 5.5 million UK households are in debt to energy suppliers, with the average amount owed reaching £132.33 - five per cent higher than last year and 16 per cent higher than in 2008.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com said consumers are still feeling the effects of rising energy costs.
"The increase in energy debt this year is symptomatic of the fact that we are entering an era of high cost energy," she said.
"Households will have to adapt if they are to protect themselves from spiralling energy bills. There are two key steps to this - make sure you are paying the lowest possible price for your energy and cut down on the amount of energy you use."
A recent Ofgem report has revealed that customers are paying more for their energy bills, despite energy companies recording increased profits.
The net margin for a typical standard tariff dual fuel customer increased by a further £30 between November and February, claims the report.
