- Monday, 2 March 2009A mother from York has told of how she was able to get an IVA and resolve her debt problems following the birth of her son.
The Press reports that Debbie Hawkins gave birth prematurely and was left covering the costs of six months of travel to visit her newborn son in a Sheffield hospital.
Such costs led her to develop debt problems which she found she was unable to resolve with her individual creditors.
But she was able to get an IVA and recover from what she owed through voluntary arrangements.
The IVA even helped where protection schemes on her credit cards had been unable to assist.
Ms Hawkins tells the publication that it was not a lack of responsibility that led her to develop debt problems.
"You shouldn't take credit if you don't think you can pay it back," she concedes.
"But when I took mine out I knew I could."
The Press previously reported figures from consultancy KPMG which forecasted 150,000 personal insolvencies over the course of 2009.
