- Thursday, 7 January 2010IVA solutions may be the answer for the increasing number of separated couples who are forced to live together due to increased housing costs.
New research by housing charity Shelter reveals nearly a quarter of people are forced to live with their ex-partner after a break up because they cannot afford to live on their own.
The survey of 5,438 people in Great Britain was undertaken to gauge the extent to which unaffordable housing affects lives and how people live.
Director of policy and campaigns at Shelter Kay Boycott said the issue of housing affordability was having major repercussions on individual's lives.
"Unfortunately relationships do break down which is painful enough, but being forced to carry on living with an ex-partner, even for a short time, must add real pressure to the situation," she said.
The high number of people who are finding themselves in this predicament indicated it may be more widespread a problem that previously realised, Ms Boycott added.
Separate research by professional advice website unbiased.co.uk reveals that 72 per cent of solicitors believe the recession has influenced their clients' attitudes towards divorce proceedings, with the main trend being delaying a settlement.
