- Monday, 18 January 2010IVA advice could be sought by those parents forced to prolong having children as a result of high housing costs.
New research by housing charity Shelter shows that 18 per cent of 18 to 44-year-olds are choosing to delay having children because of the lack of affordable housing, a figure rising to 24 per cent among 18 to 34-year-olds.
One in five (22 per cent) have waited for six years to start a family, and 37 per cent expect housing costs to impact their plans to have children for another four years.
Director of policy and campaigns at Shelter Kay Boycott said the figures indicated the true extent that the housing crisis was having on people's lives.
"Whilst it is responsible to ensure that you can afford to support a new baby, it is completely unacceptable that housing costs are changing important life decisions like starting a family in such a significant way," she said.
Recent research by savings organisation NS&I shows that Britons believe people should have an income of at least £25,000 per annum before having children to ensure financial security.
