- Tuesday, 22 December 2009IVA help could be required by the tens of thousands of university graduates struggling to find full time jobs in the recession.
Figures reported by The Guardian show that since the start of the economic downturn the unemployment rate for 18-24 year olds had increased by 5.8 per cent to 18 per cent.
The number of unemployed graduates has risen 3.5 percentage points to 20.3 per cent of all unemployed 18-24 year olds in the past year.
The Conservatives shadow skills secretary David Willets said the figures proved that young people were "bearing the brunt of Gordon Brown's economic mismanagement".
The proportion of 16-to-24 year olds classed as 'Neet' - not in education, employment, or training - has reached a record 79.7 per cent.
In his pre-budget report, Chancellor Alistair Darling announced extra government support for unemployed young people, stating they will only have to wait six months to be guaranteed a work or training placement.
