- Monday, 16 November 2009An increasing number of Britons could find themselves entering into
individual voluntary agreements (IVAs) as a result of expected energy price rises.
Centrica - British Gas' parent company - recently revealed that wholesale costs will increase from approximately 31p to 49p in the winter of 2010-11, rising a further eight pence to 57p the following winter.
The increase in wholesale price will impact upon the actual cost to consumers, with those who are already struggling to make ends meet in danger of becoming financially isolated.
Helen Dent, chief executive of Family Action, said that the charity was inundated with calls from people in financial bother.
She commented: "At this time of recession, Family Action is constantly hearing from the low-income families we work with about the stark choices they face on household spending and their fear of falling into debt."
Ms Dent went on to say that the energy providers should do more to filter some of their profits back to those most in need.
Centrica last reported operating profits of £1.86 billion.
