- Wednesday, 2 September 2009The workless household rate increased by 1.1 per cent year-on-year to 16.9 per cent, it has been revealed.
Data released by the Office for National Statistics suggests that the number of children living in a home where neither parent works has increased by 170,000 from last year.
At the same time, the working household rate where both adults work has decreased by 2.5 per cent.
With unemployment often comes the inability to pay household bills. Those who are facing bankruptcy or personal insolvency could consider entering into an
individual voluntary agreement (IVA) as an alternative.
A spokesperson from Save the Children recommended that the government follow the charity's initiative and supply families who are struggling with Crisis Grants.
She said: "Save the Children have been giving out these Crisis Grants, of between £100 and £200 to the poorest families. It's a small amount that makes a massive difference. The government could run similar schemes."
Unemployment increased earlier this year to 2.4 million, according to the Office for National Statistics.
