- Thursday, 26 November 2009Nearly a third of UK employees fear they may be made redundant in the next 12 months, new figures reveal.
According to research from the homelessness charity St Mungo's, 29 per cent of the British workforce are concerned they may lose their job in the next year - a figure that shows no improvement on confidence levels reported in 2008.
Should people's concerns become a reality, the number of people struggling financially and coming to rely on bankruptcy-avoiding measures such as
individual voluntary agreements (IVAs) could increase.
Vanessa Robinson, head of human resources practice development at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, said that it was unfortunately the case that some businesses had little alternative but to make jobs cuts.
She commented: "A lot of organisations are having to make redundancies but usually what they would try to do and what we would say in good practice is that they do look at the options like reduced hour working, flexible working and part-time working."
According to the Confederation of British Industry, half of all employers are planning pay freezes.
