- Thursday, 12 November 2009The Jobcentre Plus network has been criticised by a leading consumer rights group for being ill-equipped to deal with the record-high levels of unemployment.
Consumer Focus has suggested that flaws in the service could be jeopardising people's chances of securing work.
The inability to tie down a regular job could result in an increasing number of people struggling to cope financially and coming to rely on bankruptcy-avoiding packages such as
individual voluntary agreements (IVAs).
Richard Bates, public services lead for Consumer Focus, said that the jobseekers group was struggling to cope with the downturn, describing it as a "lottery".
He commented: "Our research shows that unemployed people could be facing a lottery over the quality of help they receive. Jobcentre Plus is clearly under strain from growing demand in the recession."
The number of people using Jobcentre Plus is currently at a 12-year high as a result of joblessness as well as diminished employment opportunities.
