'Little Britain' figures highlight debt worries of UK borrowers

- Friday, 24 July 2009

If the UK were a village of just 100 people, it would share a personal debt of £2.4 million, a new report has revealed.

Echoing the trend for scaling global statistics down to a 'village' level, this latest insight into British facts and figures highlights the extent to which many adults are struggling to get out of debt.

According to the figures compiled by Simon Usborne and published in the Independent and the Daily Mail, the average weekly wage of the 80 adult villagers would be £388 a week, with the ten richest members of the commune earning more than the poorest 50 per cent combined.

At the same time, however, six of the 100 would be claiming housing benefit, while five would have fallen into negative equity on their properties, and therefore possibly be looking for financial help and financial freedom.

The study also revealed that, if the UK were a village of 100 people, then it would donate just £17,393 to charity a year in total.

At the start of this month, Credit Action reported that personal debt in the UK has hit a collective £1.459 trillion, with this latest figure also highlighting the potential demand for personal finance solutions among the biggest borrowers.ADNFCR-2258-ID-19280642-ADNFCR
