- Monday, 28 September 2009The number of people seeking advice on
individual voluntary agreements (IVAs) could increase as a result of the non-movement of the default retirement age.
On September 25th the High Court ruled that the age of retirement in the UK should remain at 65.
Many people and unions believe that the age at which a person can be forced to leave their job should be later, particularly when increased living expenses and life expectancy are considered.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, said that the decision was not good news for the employee but benefitted the employer.
He commented: "The decision of the court will be a blow to working people who need, or want, to work on beyond 65.
"It will allow employers to go on using an arbitrary retirement age as an excuse to weed out staff without having any obligation to compensate them or use fair processes."
He went on to say that he hoped the government's planned review of the default retirement age next year would not be affected by the decision.
