- Wednesday, 26 May 2010Selling old mobile phones could make consumers money, according to new research by Consumer Focus.
Second-hand phones usually sell for about £25 but some can reach as much as £300. Spare cash could be useful for effective
debt management.
At least 68 per cent of consumers have one or more phones that they no longer use and an estimated 11 per cent own five or more which suggests that there are 85 million phones in total that could be sold.
Hannah Bullivant, mobile phone expert at Consumer Focus, said: "We discard millions of phones every year with one in ten admitting they simply put their old handsets in the bin.
"These are sophisticated bits of kit that can still be used or recycled. By throwing phones away, we're wasting huge amounts of money and adding unnecessarily to our landfill mountains."
Some mobile companies allow consumers to trade in their old phones to receive money off their new one and the extra cash saved could go on a
debt management plan.
Another initiative that lets consumers save money from their old technology is Sony's scrappage scheme.
Until July 11th consumers can recycle their old electronics and receive a discount of £150 on a new Sony product such as a HD TV.
