- Wednesday, 17 March 2010More and more people are turning to the internet for help with their
debt management plans, figures released by the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) indicate.
The CCCS' Statistical Yearbook 2009 shows that more than 150,000 people logged on to the charity's website seeking help with their debts.
Paula Searle, who is the head of E-Services at CCCS, believes that some people have problems opening up about their debt and that the anonymity of the internet provides a solution to these individuals.
"It is crucial to seek help as soon as you realise you have a debt problem," she said. "Unfortunately, too many people don't seek help quickly enough as they are held back because they feel ashamed of their situation."
Further statistics released indicate that indebtedness is becoming an ever growing problem. Just a quarter of those who telephoned the CCCS last year were able to set up a debt repayment plan, such as an
IVA or
debt management plan.
Although consumers phoning the service tended to be in less debt, they were less able to service those debts that they had, struggling to meet their own basic living costs.
