- Wednesday, 23 June 2010Online shopping increased as consumers searched for bargains in the run-up to the World Cup, leaving them with more cash than if they had made purchases on the high street.
The savings made could go towards a
debt management plan.
Total online sales reached a two year high in May, increasing by 22 per cent year-on-year, reports the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.
The World Cup has played its part in this increase. Alcohol sales were up by 23 per cent compared to last year and sales of electrical items grew by 13 per cent, suggesting consumers are hosting sports parties.
Online clothing sales also experienced a 32 per cent increase - perhaps due to the warm weather.
Chris Webster, spokesman for Capgemini, said: "It's good to see that consumers' spirits haven't been dampened by concerns over government spending cuts."
Shoppers spent £4.5 billion online during the month, the equivalent of £73 per person in the UK.
Post Office Insurance revealed recently that a third of football fans intend to increase their spending by £200 this summer.
