- Tuesday, 17 November 2009The Citizens Advice Bureau has called on the government to tighten regulation on private parking companies.
According to the charity, parking-related enquiries to its bureaux in England and Wales increased by 52 per cent from April 2006 to March 2009.
It is suggested that too much power lies with the fining company, with the individual largely powerless to object or appeal - a situation that could prove costly for people already struggling with debt problems.
David Harker, chief executive at the charity, said that the situation needed rebalancing.
He commented: "There is currently no right for consumers to appeal fines or seek redress. The government has said they are planning to do something about this issue.
"We want proper regulation in this sector that the parking public can understand and can see is fair."
In April 2006, the bureau received a total of 8,514 parking fine-related calls. By March of this year, the number had increased to 12,910.
