- Thursday, 16 July 2009The number of unemployed people, the unemployment rate and the claimant count have all increased, according to figures released by the Office of National Statistics yesterday.
Unemployment is the highest it has been since 1995, rising to 2.38 million people, with the jobless rate increasing to a 12-year high from 7.2 per cent to 7.6 per cent.
The claimant count grew by 716,800 in June, year-on-year and is the highest it has been since 1997 when the number of people on Jobseekers Allowance totalled 1.56 million.
With job opportunities remaining scarce, the number of people seeking debt management solutions such as
individual voluntary agreements could consequently rise.
John Philpott, chief economist at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, does not forecast a short-term improvement.
He said: "Any optimism that unemployment will peak below three million next year before the jobs outlook starts to improve would appear to have evaporated."
The British Chambers of Commerce believes unemployment will peak at 3.2 million next year.
