- Friday, 11 December 2009The UK's high streets are braced for record levels of shopping this festive season as consumers turn a blind eye to the recession.
That is according to Barclays, which reveals that a record £23 billion will be spent on debit cards this month, representing a four per cent year-on-year increase.
Further figures show that £5 billion will be spent at supermarkets and £1 billion at petrol stations as UK citizens make the most of the holiday season.
People's willingness to spend could result in them racking up unmanageable arrears and coming to rely on debt help in the new year.
Brian Cunnington, head of debit cards for Barclays, said: "We all know Christmas is the season of goodwill but that usually means it's the season for spending as well.
"With so much shopping and entertaining to be done debit cards are set to be well used throughout the month."
It is further revealed that £17.8 billion will be withdrawn from cash machines across the country over the Christmas period.
