- Friday, 7 May 2010Consumers facing
debt management plans who live in rural areas are less likely to seek redress over money issues, according to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
A report in the Ombudsman News revealed that those living in rural or more remote areas had less awareness about the ombudsman service and what it does compared to their urban counterparts.
Reasons cited for this include the nature of the economy in the countryside. Jobs tend to be seasonal or poorly-paid which creates higher levels of poverty and unemployment. Lack of communication is an issue too.
A female spokesperson for the Financial Ombudsman Service said: "People living in more rural and remote areas tend to know less about the ombudsman service, and their right to complain, than people living in rural areas."
She added that the body works with consumer advice groups and charities across the UK to sort out disputes between consumers and finance providers, over issues such as borrowing money which leads to the need for
debt management.
Some rural consumers had less access to these services as certain remote areas have lower levels of broadband services available, the report said.
