- Monday, 5 October 2009UK students are becoming increasing reliant on the government in order to fund themselves through university, it has been revealed.
According to recent research from Halifax, the number of students using government aid to pay for studies food and lodging has increased by ten per cent over the past year, from 49 per cent to 59 per cent.
Mike Regnier, current account director for Halifax, said that it was within a student's power to mange their level of debt provided they stayed on top of their outgoings.
He commented: "Unfortunately, our research shows that for most students borrowing is necessary to fund university.
"However, some careful financial planning can help reduce both the level and the cost of this debt. Setting a budget and sticking to it is essential."
It was widely reported last month that approximately 170,000 students started their university year without their funding from the Student Loans Company.
