- Monday, 11 May 2009The number of people looking for advice on how to clear debt has doubled in Hanley over the past nine months, reports The Sentinel.
First-quarter figures from the north Staffordshire town's Citizens Advice Bureau show twice as many people seeking advice on debt from January to March this year.
This compares with the period from April to June of 2008 - which was the "first quarter" in reporting terms for the bureau in that year.
More than 5,000 enquiries were made in the first quarter of 2009 from people looking to clear debt.
And, across all enquiry types, around 1,000 more people asked for the assistance of the bureau.
The Citizens Advice Bureau notes that debt management plans or IVAs can allow those in financial difficulty to re-establish a foothold in about six years.
Setting up an IVA could be tempting for the majority of the bureau's users, as it notes debt is now the number one issue nationwide, with a third of all queries relating to borrowed money.
