- Wednesday, 9 December 2009More houses in England and Wales should be fitted with water meters, it has been suggested.
An independent report by regulatory expert Anna Walker suggests that the current form of water billing is dated and that England and Wales should modernise by increasing the usage of meters.
However, concerns have been raised for those people who might struggle to pay under the metered system reservations that suggest there could be a rise in the need for debt advice linked to unaffordable bills.
A spokesperson for the Consumer Council for Water said: "It is particularly important that [Ms Walker] coupled her proposals for more meters with suggestions on what could be done to help those who may struggle to afford their new metered charges.
"Protection would, however, need to be in place before a large scale switch to metering."
Ms Walker recommends that 80 per cent of homes in England be fitted with water meters by 2020. The current proportion stands at 35 per cent.
