- Thursday, 27 May 2010The Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) wants the secretary of state for work and pensions, Iain Duncan Smith, to move consumers into decent jobs and to end child poverty.
With unemployment at its highest level since 1994 - some 2.5 million people do not currently have jobs - it is important to reform benefits and help people move into well paid posts to prevent the need for a
debt management plan.
CPAG has highlighted the top priorities for welfare reform ahead of a speech by Mr Duncan Smith. It suggests tackling low pay and benefit withdrawal rates.
The organisation claims that working does not necessarily make a family better off and 59 per cent of children living in poverty have a working parent.
Imran Hussain, head of policy, rights and advocacy for CPAG, said: "A modern welfare system must guarantee family security, help end child poverty and move people into work that leaves them better off instead of adding to the numbers facing in-work poverty."
Other recommendations include providing high quality support to those who want to work but are being shunned at the moment. Benefits should be adequate and not reduce a family into poverty , according to the group.
