- Monday, 3 August 2009Many more households are likely to be seeking out professional debt advice as the gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen in the UK, official figures suggest.
According to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the gap recently grew to be so that the richest fifth of the UK population enjoy a pre-tax income of around 16 times that of the poorest fifth.
This was brought about partly because the salaries of the nation's high flyers have increased at a faster rate than those of workers further down the social ladder, a factor likely to have left many people looking for professional debt advice as they struggle to cope with a rise in the cost of living.
Looking back, the ONS report concluded: "During the 1990s and 2000s, there were periods of both rising and falling inequality, but the level of inequality remained high by historical standards."
This follows on from the publication of a report from uSwitch.com, which revealed that some 2.7 million Britons have been forced to take on a second job to cope financially.
