Tens of thousands of British women could be forced to turn to debt management plans as they struggle to resist temptation on the high street, the findings of a new study suggest.

Despite the tough economic climate forcing many consumers to tighten their belts, new research has found that one in six females within the UK considers themselves to be a 'shopaholic'.

Worryingly, the average self-confessed shopaholic owes just over £3,350, mostly racked up on credit and store cards as they buy the latest fashions in a bid to emulate their celebrity idols.

What's more, the uSwitch study found that one in seven British men are afflicted by the same problem; their love affair with designer clothes and grooming products potentially leading them to need help managing debts in the long-run.

Commenting, the website's director of consumer policy Ann Robinson said: "Despite the financial constraints, women have carried on copying the lifestyles and shopping habits of their idols and ignoring the debt they are racking up in the process."

Just this week, Britney Spears was snapped out on a major shopping spree in California.   Exception: Stack empty.
